Early attempts to resist Malachor's forces led several influential factions to form the Pact of Ash and Shadow. This alliance consisted of necromancers, shadow mages, and outsiders who believed that only by adopting some of Malachor's own dark practices could they survive. The Pact allowed certain regions to maintain a precarious independence, but its members' morally ambiguous methods created tension and mistrust among other resistance groups. The pact would become a controversial and ultimately tragic force in the early years of the war.
